Boards, Commissions, Committee Opportunities

Successful committee applicants will be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council to fill a specified term of appointment. Please see the City Clerk for questions and/or details (509-720-5102). Please do not send in an application unless there are openings, and any committee openings will be noted below.
LODGING TAX ADVISORY COMMITTEE ALTERNATES: Two openings
Spokane Valley Municipal Code (SVMC) 3.20.040 provides for the establishment of a Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, which shall consist of five members: two representatives of businesses required to collect the tax, two members involved in activities authorized to be funded by the tax, and one City Council member. Effective April 5, 2023, SVMC 3.20.040 also provides for one alternate Committee member involved in activities authorized to be funded by the tax, and one alternate Committee member from a business required to collect the tax. This opening is for those two alternates. Committee appointments shall be for either one or two years. Meetings are generally held one or twice in the fall. Applicants need not be residents of Spokane Valley but those with a business or activity within Spokane Valley City limits are highly encouraged to apply. Appointments are made by confirmation of the Mayor’s recommendation. If you or someone you know is interested and qualified to become an alternate member of this committee, please submit an application to the Spokane Valley City, 10210 E Sprague Ave, Spokane Valley, WA 99206 (509) 720-5102. These positions will remain open until filled. The term for these positions would begin immediately upon appointment.
Hotel/Motel Tourism Promotion Area (TPA) Commission
Spokane Valley City Council adopted Spokane Valley Municipal Code 3.21 which establishes the Hotel/Motel Tourism Promotion Area Commission. The TPA Commission is created as an advisory body to make recommendations to the City Council for use of revenues derived from the TPA fee. Appointments to or removals from this Commission shall be made by the Mayor with confirmation by a majority of Council. The intent is to appoint individuals who represent a cross-section of hotels within the City of Spokane Valley. City Council would rely on these hoteliers’ expertise in proposing an annual workplan/budget for expenditure of the funds generated from TPA fees, which would guide Council in allocating the funds for tourism and marketing promotion. The Commission shall be composed of five voting representatives and one non-voting ex-officio member assigned by the City Manager, who will function as liaison between the City Council and the Commission. Members shall serve without compensation. Initially three members shall have a three-year term, and two shall have a two-year term. Upon the expiration of the initial three-year term, all positions shall be for two years. Commission members shall include one member from an economy hotel, one from a midscale hotel, one from an upper midscale hotel, one from an upscale hotel, and one from a full service hotel with over 200 rooms. All applicants for consideration must be operators/owners of lodging businesses within the City of Spokane Valley or employees of the operator of such lodging business. Members of the first TPA Commission were appointed January 3, 2023. Regular TPA Meetings will be held at City Hall Conference Room N212, on the 3rd Thursday of the month, from 10 a.m. to noon. The meetings are open to the public.
Planning Commission
The purpose of the Commission is to study and make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council for future planned growth through continued review of the City's comprehensive land use plan, development regulations, shoreline management, environmental protection, public facilities, capital improvements, and other matters as directed by the City Council. Qualifications for this Commission include having an interest in planning, land use, transportation, capital infrastructure, and building and landscape design as evidenced by training, experience, or interest in the City of Spokane Valley. Commission members are nominated by the Mayor and confirmed by a majority vote of the City Council. Members are selected without respect to political affiliations and serve without compensation Members must reside within the city limits of Spokane Valley. The Commission generally meets the second and fourth Thursdays at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.
Lodging Tax Advisory Committee
Per Spokane Valley Municipal Code 3.20.040, there is established a Lodging Tax Advisory Committee consisting of five members. Two members shall be representatives of businesses required to collect the tax, two members involved in activities authorized to be funded by the tax, and one member of the City Council. The City shall solicit recommendations from organizations representing businesses that collect the tax and organizations that are authorized to receive funds pursuant to this chapter. The distribution to organizations of lodging tax proceeds are recommended by this Committee and submitted to Council for final distribution. The grant process for consideration of these funds usually begins late August with grant applications being submitted to the City by late September for funding the following year. This Committee generally meets once or twice a year in mid-October.

We proactively address issues which detract form the safety and quality of life for citizens of Spokane County.
